Raymond Kwan

Viola

Raymond Kwan started learning the piano at age 6 and later attained ABRSM Grade 8 (Merit) with teacher Wong Wai-Kwan.  At age 7, he started violin lesson and studied with Ngai Ho-Chau for many years.  During secondary school at St Paul’s Co-Educational College, he added viola and was co-principal violist of its symphony orchestra.  He also sang bass in the school choirs,  which won multiple competitions at Hong Kong School Music Festival.

Kwan obtained the highest grade for Music at Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination in 1988 and took history courses on Western arts and music at University of St. Thomas, Houston, Texas, USA.  He was member of the University Singers.

Kwan is principal violist of Hong Kong Metropolitan Pop Orchestra and St. Paul’s Co-Education College Alumni Orchestra.  He plays viola with Hong Kong Medical Association Orchestra and Asian Chamber Orchestra, and will start performing with Hong Kong Festival Orchestra in 2017.  He was principal violist of Hong Kong Scout Orchestra during its Beijing tour in summer 2011.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Kwan received his M.Sc. in Physiology from Georgetown University, Washington, DC in 1995.  He lives in Kam Tin with his wife and three dogs.
