Born in Hong Kong, Head of Woodwind, Brass and Percussion at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.
Yiu graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 1989. In the same year, he was awarded the Hong Kong Jockey Club Scholarship to study at the Queensland Conservatorium, the Royal Academy of Music in London, the Rotterdam Conservatorium in Holland. Yiu also studied at the Köln Musikhochschule in Germany, where he was awarded the Diplom der Künstlerischen Abschlußprüfung with distinction in 1994. His teachers include Chan Kwok Cheung, Peter Cooper, Anthony Camden, Celia Nicklin, George Caird, Emanuel Abbühl and Christian Schneider. He has also attended classes of Thomas Indermühle, Lothar Koch and Maurice Bourgue.
As a soloist, he has appeared with the Goldberg Ensemble from England, the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, the Macau Orchestra, the Korea Ulsan University Ensemble, Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra, Euro-Asian Philharmonic Orchestra, Vietnam (Ho Chi Ming City) Orchestra, Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra and the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra.
Yiu is an active chamber musician in Europe. He has performed new works by composers in concerts such as those by the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM) in 1988, 2002 and 2007. He is a also member of the baroque ensemble “Conjunto Hemiola” and was invited to perform at the International Summer Festival “Quincena Musical” in San Sebastián, Spain in 1996. Yiu has been invited to perform with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields under the baton of Sir Neville Marriner on their Hong Kong tour and has also performed with the London Virtuosi on their Spain tour. Yiu has appeared at festivals in Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, China, Canada, England, Holland, France, Germany, Italy and Salzburg in Austria. In 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2011, Yiu was invited by the International Double Reed Society to perform in New York, Utah, Arizona in the United States and Birmingham in England.
Yiu is invited regularly by Xi’an Conservatory of Music, Xinghai Conservatory of Music, Shanghai Conservatory of Music, the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, National Chiayi University in Taiwan, the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music in Singapore, Stuttgart Musikhochschule and the Macau Culture Department to give oboe masterclasses. In 2015, he was invited to give masterclasses in Conservatoire Superieur de Musique in Lyon, the Leipzig Musikhochschule and Chung Ang University in Seoul, Korea.
Yiu served as an adjudicator for the 13rd Concours International Musique De Chambre – Lyon in France in April 2017. In recent years, he also served as an adjudicator for the final round of the Fernard Gillet-Hugo Fox oboe competition at the 2015 International Double Reed Society Conference in Tokyo, Japan and the prestigious Muri International Oboe Competition in Switzerland.
Currently, Yiu is also the Artistic Director of Hong Kong Wind Kamerata, the overseas consultant of the Macau Youth Orchestra, as well as an adjunct faculty member of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Baptist University. He also is an artist-in-residence for the Education University of Hong Kong and is serving as a founding member on the board of the Asian Double Reed Association.
In 2016, Yiu was elected the Associate of the Royal Academy of Music, London (ARAM) for his significant contribution in the music profession.
